Class C – standard

Different specifications of standard class C certificates are available. For each specification of the standard class C certificate, there is a policy describing the correct usage and the defined issuance process.

Depending on the specification, standard class C certificates contain the following information:
- Clear identification of the owner or object to be certified. This can be a person, an organisation or a system
- Email address of the owner/object to be certified
- Organisations; these are identified in the certificate by means of a UID
- Certification authority (issuer)
- Certificate validity
The information in the certificate cannot be changed. If there is a change in the owner's name or email address, for example, the certificate must be reissued.
Characteristics
The following specifications are available as policies:
Publication
- Standard class C certificates are not published.
- An exception is the publication of the public keys of organisation certificates for group mailboxes in the federal government's directory.
Validity
- Standard class C certificates are valid for a maximum of 3 years, but they can also be valid for only 1 or 2 years, depending on the specification.
- Owners are responsible for the lifecycle of the certificate.
